Elementary
St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School offers a challenging standards-based curriculum, that includes both academic subjects and social emotional learning for children in Kindergarten through Grade Five. Our teachers individualize their classrooms to meet the needs of the class as a whole while taking into account each child’s style, academic level, and interests. The curriculum has been designed to educate the whole child. Students are encouraged to reach their full potential in all areas and to be confident in their ability to learn.
At the Elementary level, the core curriculum subjects are taught in English. Armenian language, history, culture, and religion are taught in Armenian, with an emphasis on creating awareness and instilling an appreciation of Armenian heritage.
Preschool
St. Stephen’s Armenian Preschool provides an environment which encourages a child to develop skills in all areas through hands-on activities and discovery in a bilingual environment. The Preschool classes serve as an introduction to the structure of the school schedule, allowing children to meet others of the same age and learn important social skills. Foundations for academic skills are taught, such as shape recognition, names of colors, and awareness of alphabet letters and corresponding sounds. Children are given the opportunity to develop confidence and become more independent through arts and crafts, group games and activities, which usually center on the unit of study for the month. There is ample opportunity for free play, a time for discovery and independent learning. Through play, children acquire important social skills; develop language and math readiness and coordination skills, all of which serve as a foundation for building concepts.
The curriculum is carefully designed to meet the individual needs and interest of the children, and to stimulate learning in all of the developmental areas: physical, social, emotional and cognitive. The development is fostered through thematic units that integrate all subjects.
