WATERTOWN, MA. - In June 2019, St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School (SSAES) successfully completed its 35th academic year. The Graduation Ceremonies were held on June 13 (K) and June 14 (Elementary), in the presence of enthusiastic parents and the clergy of the local Armenian churches. On June 14, Dr. Vartan Matiossian, executive director of the Armenian National Education Committee (ANEC) came specially from New York to attend the Elementary Graduation.

The Kindergarten and the Elementary programs were dedicated both to honor the the 35th Anniversary of the school. Students celebrated this anniversary through song, poem and dance. The Elementary program was also dedicated to the 150th Anniversaries of Gomidas Vartabed and of our great poet, Hovaness Toumanyan, as well as to the Armenian Press, as Aram Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia announced that this year, is the Year of the Press.

WATERTOWN, Mass. – As part of the school’s STEM Initiative, St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School hosted STEM Month from March through April. Students engaged in a variety of activities designed to spark creative and innovative thinking across all fields of science.The mission of this initiative is to increase the focus and emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) throughout the school.

Stem Month included: computer programming (K-5), robotics, engineering design challenges, math activities, presentations by Audubon Society instructors and Animal Ambassadors and a field trip to the Harvard Natural History Museum.

On April 8, students demonstrated everything their understanding of these important subjects at a Science Fair, which included the following presentations:

Watertown, MA - Thirteen SSAES students participated in the 9th Annual Watertown Spelling Bee for Grades 1-5, on Sunday, March 31, 2019. They are Georgette Ishagyan from 1st grade, Arman Stepanian, Elsa Sarkissian, and Nara Behbahani from 3rd grade, and fifth graders Lea Karapetian, Lara Chekijian, Anais Kahvejian, Alla Petrosyan, Nicholas Nalbandyan, Julia Chapian, Saro Iskenderian, Gassia Minassian, and Narineh Mardiros.

The Fifth Grade team consisting of Lea, Lara, and Anais got 1st place in their first round! They had some very tricky words and made it to the double elimination round. Our two other 5th grade teams did an excellent job too.
